St. Louis, Missouri
Patrick Keller
I am originally from St. Louis and grew up on White Castle®. Back in 1984, I was stationed on a Canadian Government Island in British Columbia. It is run by the U.S. Navy and the Canadian Navy for testing of underwater weapons. My family lived on a base in Washington State. The only way to my location was by float plane (Bush plane) and by helicopter. One day, my father-in-law was coming to visit us from St. Louis on an early morning flight, so I asked him to pick up 100 freshly frozen White Castle Sliders on the way to the airport. When he got off the plane, my wife drove back to the base where a float plane took my White Castle Sliders to British Columbia. When the plane arrived, I had our helicopter pick up the Sliders and fly them to the control room on the island where I was working. Since I was the only American on the island, I offered some of my White Castle Sliders to my Canadian co-workers before I started heating them up. Their reaction to seeing a White Castle Slider for the first time was negative. However, once the aroma started permeating throughout the control center, they all wanted a bite. After their first bite, the Canadians attacked my cache of White Castles like vultures on a gut wagon. All 100 Sliders were gone within 15 minutes, which could have been less if it were not for the time it took to microwave the frozen White Castles. Within only 12 hours, my White Castle Sliders traveled over 2,400 miles by car, plane, car (again), plane (again) and finally by helicopter.
